Guest Post: Cameron Day (on the subject of Quakers and Tolkien)

Written September 27th
Woodbrooke Quaker Center, Birmingham
(as dictated by Cameron Day--an aspiring young Wordsworth)

Today, I learned that J.R.R. Tolkien lived in Birmingham.  If this is true, then I know where he got his inspiration for the Ents.  They share every characteristic except for bark.  The Ents have to be inspired by Quakers.  They are honest, slow-moving, discerning people.  They consider themselves stewards of nature.  They have a stereotype of being elderly (I have found no reason to disbelieve this).

I came to this realization this morning at the silent meeting.  We were gathered together in a circle.  Nobody spoke, but I am certain they were communicating.  This was done through the "growls of their bowels."  I think mine was the only stomach not screaming.  This meeting was almost identical to Tolkien's gathering of the Ents.  I will never look at either creature the same.

Post Script:  The Quakers have yet to lose their wives, but I would not put this achievement out of their reach.

  2. I don't know a lot about Quakers but after reading several pages of the Quaker Problems meme, I also thought of Tolkien's Ents!
